Lascaris War Rooms is an underground command centre carved into the rock beneath Valletta’s bastions, used to direct Malta’s defence during the Second World War — including the planning of the Allied invasion of Sicily. It’s one of the best rainy-day options on the island, since the entire experience is indoors and underground, and genuinely engaging rather than a fallback when the weather turns. Guided tours take you through the original operations rooms, kept largely as they were, with the tunnels themselves adding to the atmosphere before you even reach the exhibits. It’s a proper piece of Malta’s wartime history, and a change of pace from the churches and bastions that make up most of Valletta’s sightseeing. Tours run at set times through the day, so it’s worth checking the schedule and booking ahead rather than turning up and hoping for a slot. Note that on-site ticket purchases are card only. Allow around an hour for the full visit. It sits within Valletta itself, so it’s easy to combine with a morning or afternoon exploring the rest of the city, rain or shine.
