Upper Barrakka Gardens

Upper Barrakka Gardens sits on the highest point of Valletta’s fortifications, and it’s the single best view in the city — the entire Grand Harbour laid out below, with the Three Cities and, if you’re staying with us in Birgu, your own neighbourhood across the water. It costs nothing to visit and takes ten minutes to walk end to end, which makes it an easy stop rather than a planned excursion. Time it for midday and you’ll catch the Saluting Battery below firing its noon gun, a tradition carried on since British rule. Early morning is the quietest time, before the coach groups arrive, and gives the clearest light for photos across the harbour. In the late afternoon, the sandstone bastions catch the sun and the gardens fill with a mix of locals on a break and visitors working through their Valletta list — worth sitting for ten minutes rather than just snapping a photo and moving on. There are shaded benches, and a small café nearby if you want a coffee with the view. It’s an easy add-on to a day exploring Valletta’s streets, and one of the few things in the city that’s genuinely free. Open daily, early morning until late evening.
