Before Valletta existed, Birgu was Malta’s capital, and the Three Cities — Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua — still feel like the quieter, older side of the Grand Harbour story. If you’re staying with us in this area, you get all of the history with a fraction of the crowds.
Start at the waterfront
The Birgu Waterfront is the obvious place to begin, lined with restaurants and yachts moored where galleys once sat. Walk it in the early evening when the light hits Valletta across the water and the day-trippers have gone — this is the view most visitors to Malta never see.
Get lost in the backstreets
Away from the water, Birgu’s streets are narrow, sandstone-walled and largely untouched by traffic. Fort St Angelo dominates the skyline and is worth the entry fee for the views alone, while the Inquisitor’s Palace gives a genuinely different angle on Malta’s history than the usual Knights-of-Malta story told in Valletta.
Senglea’s point
A short walk or a quick ferry ride from Birgu, Senglea’s Gardjola Gardens sit right at the tip of the peninsula with views straight across to the Three Cities and Valletta. It’s one of the best photo spots on the island and one of the least crowded.
Where to eat
The Birgu Waterfront restaurants lean towards seafood and Mediterranean menus with harbour views, and prices are generally more reasonable than the equivalent in Valletta. For something more local, head a street or two back from the water.
Why stay here
Birgu and the Three Cities are well connected — a ferry across to Valletta takes minutes, and the harbour front location means you’re rarely more than a short walk from a good meal or a quiet spot to watch the boats.
It’s also simply a nice place to come home to. After a day spent in Valletta’s crowds, stepping off the ferry into Birgu’s quiet streets feels like arriving somewhere entirely different, even though you’ve barely travelled any distance at all.
